News Watch to host training for journalists on covering criminal cases

South Dakota News Watch is hosting a training session for journalists on how to cover criminal cases.

The program, Lost In Court: A Journalist’s Guide to Covering Criminal Cases, will help South Dakota journalists and students gain credibility and confidence in navigating what can be a daunting assignment.

Two sessions will be held on Saturdays in September between 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.:

Larry Long, circuit court judge and former defense lawyer, state’s attorney and state attorney general, and Craig Kennedy, former Yankton defense attorney, prosecutor and lawmaker, will walk through a criminal case using court documents and evidence photos.

Then local state court administrators Kristi Erdman in Rapid City and Karl Thoennes in Sioux Falls will explain how to access court documents and cover hearings and trials.

The cost is $20/person for admission, lunch and training materials. Details, including how to reserve a seat, are available on this Lost in Court invitation. Space is limited and the deadline to order tickets is Friday, Sept. 8.
