South Dakota journalists, students and anyone interested in learning more about the justice system are invited to free training on March 28 that will be held online and in person at Sioux Falls and Rapid City.

Chief U.S. District Judge Roberto Lange and Senior U.S. District Judge Karen Schreier will lead the session designed to help journalists cover all aspects of federal courts. High school and college students studying journalism, government, political science and law also would benefit from it.

Matthew Thelen and Summer Wakefield from South Dakota’s U.S. District Clerk of Courts office will explain how to access court documents and track hearings. Maureen Watz Gornik from the Eighth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will take part remotely and walk through the appeals process.

Attendees will also get access to the South Dakota Crime Reporting Guide, a resource for covering state and federal courts in South Dakota.

The session will be held 9-11 a.m. Central time Friday, March 28, online at sd.net and in person at the SDPB studios at Sioux Falls (601 N. Phillips Ave.) and Rapid City (415 Main St.).
