News Watch receives $100,000 national grant

South Dakota News Watch is one of 205 local newsrooms across the country that will split an initial $20 million award from Press Forward.

The national coalition of funders is investing more than $500 million to strengthen local newsrooms, close longstanding gaps in journalism coverage, advance public policy that expands access to local news, and to scale the infrastructure the sector needs to thrive.

News Watch will use the $100,000 over two years to explore ways to expand its news coverage in the state, diversify its revenue sources and help with operational improvements.

Since 2017, the independent nonprofit has provided in-depth stories to its own readers as well as its media partner broadcasters and newspapers. South Dakota News Watch sees the grant as a symbolic gesture that national funders are investing in the organization and, ultimately, the state and its residents.
